5th Grade Westwood Rocks!

My Example for Students

5th graders worked incredibly hard to create these meticulously painted rocks of a loved one in their family!  Check out the pictures to see how they planned painted and added details to create stylized interpretations of someone in their family on 2 small rocks found locally!

Students final artworks were displayed with a picture of the person they have chosen and a paper plan used to map out were everything would go.

Prior to coming up with a paper play students received their 2 rocks, glued them to a piece of cardboard to make painting a little easier and painted them the skin-tone of the person they had chosen to depict.  We used acrylic paint which also made the rocks easier to draw on later.

The paper plans looked like this:

Students traced their rocks onto the paper and worked from a photograph with colored pencils to generate a plan for how they would paint their rocks.  I really believe that this step was a crucial part of why the students were so successful in creating their final product.  It often adds another class period or two to a project but I think plans like this are totally worth it and can also often be displayed with the final product.
