2nd Grade students began the year by looking at objects and the shapes the they were made out of. From this we also started to discuss light and shadow. Below you can see some of the final products 2nd graders created.
This lesson was presented to the class by providing a step by step instruction. Often times I find that giving students certain steps they have to follow can be helpful to them in working but restricting in expressing themselves and generating an individual work of art. In this lesson I found just the opposite; despite the fact that they had to follow directions and steps they each created unique and wonderful works of art that allowed them to express their own individuality.
Students did an amazing job creating color value and shadows to generate the illusion of 3-D space around their confections.
I made the display cases at both schools mimic the shelved at a bakery. As students were done creating their treats I could immediately put them up without worrying about mounting the work of having blank space in the display.
