Classic 2nd Grade coil pots with a twist!
For these pots we constructed them using a coil building method: The clay is rolled into coils and built up to form a wall in a circular pattern. After building the coil walls students blended the clay coils together and sculpted them to give the pot an individual touch. As you can see some students kept the pot rather straight while others took this opportunity to flare out the tops or bottoms of their pots. Students at Hanlon used fluorescent colors to paint their pots while students a Deerfield used metallic paint. Teaching at both schools gave me the opportunity, as it so ofter does, to experiment and try something different with each group. A wise women once told me that "As an art teacher you much take risks if you expect your students to do the same". Overall, they all came out great! I love the pop of color on the fluorescent pots and the metal look the metallic paint gave to the clay.
With great excitement one of the 2nd grade students said to me the other day "Mr. worth my parents thought the pot was made of metal, they actually thought it was metal hahaha". Art is amazing on so many levels!
