In the first two classes of this project we took about 5 minutes to read this book.
Prior to beginning our drawing we looked at pictures of cats from the book and thought about what shapes we needed to draw to be able to draw a cat. This step was very helpful, especially for students who immediately after reading to book said "I can't draw a cat thats really hard".
Students began by using white chalk pencils on black paper to draw the outline of their cat. Some students didn't like the way the chalk felt on the paper so they used a white oil pastel. This outline gave us a basis for what would later become a very colorful creation.
After students had an outline (in our second class) we looked at work by Laurel Burch (below) for inspiration regarding how we would go about decorating our cats.
Students dove right in, adding patterns and colors to their cats.
I have to admit the disco theme was the idea of one of my students that quickly caught on!
The backgrounds were colored with gold sparkly paint after we completed our work on the cats.
Each cat really took on its own personality!
