4th Graders have just begun this exciting grid drawing project. Each student received an 8"x8" picture of bird (everyone got their own) which they gridded into 1" squares. Students then got a larger 16"x16" piece of watercolor paper (4 times the size of their given bird). After creating 2" squares on the larger paper students began to translate each box on their picture with the corresponding box on their paper. Like I've found in the past, this process is easier for some students and poses a struggle for others. Through this process students are presented with a tool that may be useful in the future.
After each box in translated onto the larger paper students outlines their birds in sharpie and began to paint with watercolors. This part is really exciting as students begin to blend colors together to create darks and lights. Before we begin painting we talk about the various color values (no one part is one color). More picture to come as students continue painting!
I find that students often have extreme difficulty with painting and thus fail to enjoy the simple pleasures which working with paint offers. To help ease the paint I discussed "tricks to painting" with students before we began painting our birds.
Here are some of out finished birds, absolutely stunning!!!
